Farmed salmon safe for consumption
I am writing on behalf of the B.C. salmon farming industry in response to the article titled "Fish farming raises toxic debate" (by Miles Pittman, Food, Aug. 7 - 13 issue). In our opinion there were several serious errors contained in this article.

Most important to note is that farm salmon does not contain unsafe levels of PCBs. The Environmental Working Group report found the 10 farmed salmon tested by them to be well within FDA and CFIA guidelines. However, they use this report to take issue with the FDA standards. The report contains many misstatements of fact, inaccuracies and is generally thought by independent food safety experts to be an unscientific approach to the subject.

We also wanted to point out that there are other sources of information about the Environmental Working Group report other than the information that was printed in the New York Times article.

I encourage your writers to contact us directly if you they any questions, or are looking for statistics or figures for further articles. You can reach us at 250-286-1636 or www.salmonfarmers.org.
