| · Its another alt-country/ orch-pop CanCon classic almost!
Burquitlam Plazas Nick Krgovich is also P:ano, the moniker under which he released "All of November, Most of October" one of the most perfect slacker pop tracks of last year, it was halfway between Lambchop and the Rachels.
Big on Fall is both more of the same, and less: it pulls together two EPs, one recorded shortly before the P:ano sessions, and one recorded shortly afterward. The earlier, piano-based one is the more successful, with the Mark Eitzel influence more apparent in the vocals, and some interesting post-something instrumentals adding an extra dimension to the songs, a bit like a whimsical version of
Tindersticks II this part gets four out of five.
The second half, however, is a bit of a mess, as Krgovich farms out the performance of these eight songs to various acquaintances, with exceedingly uneven results, even from Veda Hille so this part gets two out of five.
So, despite a very strong first half, you will be better off searching out last years album, When Its Dark and Its Summer (one of the essential Canadian recordings of 2002). A new and orchestral P:ano CD has been promised for later this year, and is eagerly awaited.
