Bike rack optional
After I returned from a trip to Holland recently and unpacked all my groovy souvenirs, showcased my fuzzy cartoon yak bag and sipped my import tea, I had only one regret – I did not buy that folding bike for $300.

It was a sweet little bike that rode well, probably better in Holland than in Alberta, but it would have fit in my suitcase, I could have taken it with me anywhere and it would have served its purpose. I could have ridden to the magazine shop and bought an ice cream on the way home without ever having to lock up my bike. I had just written it off as another missed opportunity when I discovered bikefriday.com.

Bike Friday is an American company that specializes in quality touring bikes that can fit in your suitcase. Whether it’s a recreational, road, mountain, tandem or recumbent bike you’re after, you’ll find a stellar product that won’t require a roof rack. You can custom order your bike from a huge selection that takes price and personal riding styles into account.

Be warned, however – the bikes aren’t cheap. Prices start at $598 US for a basic urban commuter to $5,960 for a Titanium Lite Tandem (seats and pedals not included). There are slightly less expensive, certified pre-owned bikes available through the site, in addition to helpful information on service, clubs and events for the avid rider. If you still need a sales pitch, you can find testimonials from everyone from regular suburban families to hardcore international Ironman competitors.
