Jazz fest highlights
Sure, Jazz Festival Calgary has several stellar big-name headliners, but there are also many artists who find their groove outside the mainstream. In the interest of getting you out of the concert halls and into the clubs and galleries, here are our picks for some of the ancillary events taking place this week:

· The Jazz on the Wing series at the Art Gallery of Calgary features a number of "fringe" artists, including the Eric Boeren Quartet on Saturday, June 21. Cornet player Boeren is the latest of several Dutch musicians to visit the festival, and he brings with him Michael Moore on saxes and clarinet, Wilbert de Joode on bass and Han Bennink on drums. Dutch jazz has a light heart and a joyful swing, and this quartet brings boundless energy and excitement to its live gigs.

· Meanwhile, the Danny Sponagle Centre (434 Meredith Road N.E.) will host the Canada Council Residency Workshop Project from June 20 to 22. Each day between 1 and 5 p.m., various local and international artists have the opportunity to workshop new pieces for the public. These free workshop sessions will be followed by a grand finale concert on Sunday, June 22 at 8 p.m. Participating artists include saxophonists Steve Slagle, Pat Belliveau and Kent Sangster, bassist Darek Oleszkiewicz and guitarist Ralf Buschmeyer, among others. For more information, check the Web site at www.jazzfestivalcalgary.ca.

· Finally, in a peripheral festival event presented by Calgary’s nach Hause, Toronto’s Jazzstory plays the EM Media Gallery on Tuesday, June 24. A quartet comprised of some of the hottest young turks on Canada’s improvised music scene – guitarist Tim Posgate, bassist Rob Clutton, trumpeter Lina Allemano and drummer Jean Martin – Jazzstory takes abstract sounds in original new directions. Calgary-based trio ZAY will open. For more information, please contact nach_hause@hotmail.com. Tickets available at the door.
