| · Summer lovin, had me a blast.
· Holly Cole performs live at the Jubilee Auditorium on Tuesday, June 24.
The song choices on Canadian chanteuse Holly Coles latest album, Shade, definitely suggest a summer vibe witness "Heatwave," "Too Darn Hot" and "Lazy Afternoon." The overall feel is mellow and smoky Coles sultry alto is more enticing than that of her jazz-pop counterpart Diana Krall.
There are a couple of missteps the Rodgers and Hammerstein-penned "We Kiss In A Shadow" doesnt adapt well to jazz, and the arrangements are sometimes a bit too lush but the performers are all top-notch, including Coles longtime sidemen Aaron Davis (piano) and David Piltch (bass), as well as noted bassist George Koller and blues guitarist Kevin Breit. In particular, their work on Coles interpretations of "It Never Entered My Mind" and the Beach Boys classic "God Only Knows" helps to make these pieces heartfelt and alluring perfect for a languid evening on the verandah.
