TH’ LEGENDARY SHACK*SHAKERS
Cockadoodledon’t
Bloodshot Records
· If your hips ain’t shakin’, you ain’t listenin’.

Nashville’s Legendary Shack*Shakers are adamant about not being labelled "alt-country." Insofar as alt-country is a narrowly defined genre now, I’ll buy that. OK, yeah, there are those subtle touches of mandolin that guitarist JoeBuck throws in every now and again, but they’re pitted against a thumping bass line – it don’t sound much like Wilco to me.

Cockadoodledon’t goes from straight-up country and bluegrass to heavy electric blues to garage-style rockabilly. Psychobilly rears its head on tracks like the gory "Blood on the Bluegrass." The rhythms are driving, even on mainly acoustic tracks like "Clodhopper." Frontman "Colonel" J. D. Wilkes sings like a madman, and every track aims to get your butt out of your chair and onto the dancefloor (or into the mosh pit). Maybe not up to "legendary" status yet – the distorted vocals probably work better live than on an album – but it sure is fun.
