JAIDENE VEDA
Saturday, May 24
H20 Lounge
The merging of beats and jazz motifs has roots in global dance music, but its a relatively unique combination for a Calgary act. Nevertheless, local songstress Jaidene Veda, formerly of the dubbode collective, is one artist who embraces the hybrid as her own.
Veda is set to launch her sophomore record, Voisces, and shes doing it in style, with trumpeter Allistor Elliot and house DJ Citrus joining her for her release party.
Since her last recording, Veda has changed her approach a little she used to sing as an accompaniment to house music, but now shes working with local producers to develop songs that incorporate house. Its a subtle difference, and shes still using her ability to find inspiration from the beats, but she is cultivating a sound that is uniquely hers while still falling under the flag of electronic music.
"I like the blend of electronic music and jazz its a good fit for me," says Veda. "If people hear elements of St. Germain in our music, thats a good thing, and thats the element both Allistor and Citrus bring to the performance organics and beats."
As for Vedas vocalese, she sings sotto voce, something for which she makes no apologies.
"I like more quiet, more subtle vocalists
. I like the intimacy of trip-hop and quieter music
. Thats a positive thing to me."
In concert, Veda has a knack for intimacy, but it comes with all the energy and vibe a dancefloor demands. With her live performances, her goal is to make people feel connected to each other.
"I want people to feel like theyve shared something with us that weve all participated in something that isnt just a traditional DJ event I suppose more of a musical, jazz event, with a modern flair
.
"I want people to have a good time to enjoy themselves and hopefully let the music take (them)." |
