NADA SURF
Let Go
Barsuk Records
· Booted from the majors, Nada Surf makes the best of a third chance.

After the success of their debut single "Popular," Nada Surf were MTV buzz-bin darlings. Those who ventured past the surface found a competent band wedged firmly in the gap between the Replacements and Weezer. Their follow-up went mostly unnoticed and the band would probably prefer it that way, but with the new Let Go, Nada Surf prove that indie labels agree with them. The opening acoustic ballad "Blizzard of ’77" shows a lot more talent than they had previously disclosed. Matthew Caws's improved range helps his voice soar beautifully over some great trademark Nada Surf rockers, well-used string arrangements and hand-clapping happiness. "The Way You Wear Your Head" turns Cheap Trick on its ear, while the remainder of the album sees them turning simple phrases into elegant choruses. The reverbed proof lies in the melancholy "Blonde On Blonde," where two-line verses stand down for a single refrain repeated for almost five minutes.
