With all the hype surrounding Vikter Duplaix, you’d think Marvin Gaye was being brought back to life. Introduced to the world by King Britt and Jazzy Jeff, Duplaix has the earnestness and the skill to carry on in Marvin’s fine tradition, but how about a little meat for the bone?
Some of International Affairs is so saccharine that you forget Duplaix is incredibly talented. Although somewhat obsessed with being loving and ultra deep while being in love, the lesson he’s missing from Marvin, Roy Ayers, and Curtis Mayfield is the political edge they brought to their bedroom tracks. Where’s Duplaix’s "What’s Going On?"
While he’s set up to be the next R & B superstar, he’s still hasn’t distinguished himself from the Remy Shands of this world. The absence of content highlights the fact that Duplaix has a lot of growing to do before he takes his place as the heir apparent of the tradition.
