UNDERTAKIN’ DADDIES
Devil in the Rearview
Caribou Records
· Southern stylings from north of 60.

Country music in the Yukon? Certainly, if you’re the Undertakin’ Daddies. Devil in the Rearview, the group’s second full-length release, is a pleasant blend of country, folk and bluegrass tunes. Original songs like "Two Wheels In The Ditch" are paired with covers of Merle Haggard and Willie P. Bennett pieces, with harmonica, mandolin, dobro and fiddle as the featured instruments.

I’m not sure if the dramatic title is warranted, though. Devil in the Rearview suggests a sense of urgency in the music – if all the hounds of hell are on your tail, you’ll probably be moving fairly quickly. The Undertakin’ Daddies, on the other hand, seem to be just ambling along. While there are up-tempo numbers, the overall effect is one of sitting comfortably on the front porch watching the sun go down – or stay up, as often happens in the Land of the Midnight Sun.
