| The Writers Trust of Canada will be holding a major celebration of Canadian authors on Thursday, April 24 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Martha Cohen Theatre as part of Canada Book Week (April 21 to 27). This come-and-go event is free and open to the public and will feature a chance for you to meet over 30 local authors and have them sign their books for you. The night will be highlighted by the first-ever joint reading by Albertas two 2002 Governor Generals Award-winning authors: Andrew Nikiforuk, who won in the non-fiction category for Saboteurs, and Gloria Sawai of Edmonton, who won in the fiction category for A Song For Nettie Johnson. The reading will take place at 7 p.m.
Also as part of the Canada Book Week festivities, a giant book has been set up at Chinook Centre for people to sign with their thoughts about Canadian books. The book will become a permanent display at the Calgary Public Library.
On the heels of last weeks announcement of nominees for the Alberta Book Awards, the shortlist for the W.O. Mitchell Book Prize has been released as well. Nominees for this prize include: Paulo da Costa for Scent of a Lie, Larissa Lai for Salt Fish Girl and Rajinderpal S. Pal for Pulse. A shortlist reading featuring all three nominees will be held at Pages bookstore on April 29 at 7:30 p.m. The award will be presented May 28.
Congratulations to local poet Sheri-D Wilson, whose short film Spinsters Hanging in Trees won a Rosie Award at the AMPIA Awards in the "Best Short or Vignette" category. This poem was first heard on Sheri-Ds CD, sweet taste of lightning, and was published in one of her books, Between Lovers. This film also won a gold at the Houston Film Festival and three ACE awards.
One of Canadas foremost playwrights, Tomson Highway, will host readings by Alberta playwrights at the Auburn Saloon on Saturday, April 19 beginning at 5 p.m. This event is open and free to the public. Martin Morrow launches his new book, Wild Theatre: The History of One Yellow Rabbit, Thursday, April 17 at 7 p.m. at McNally Robinson Books. This book is a chronicle of the ambitious Calgary rebels who founded One Yellow Rabbit theatre company and their roller-coaster ride through two decades of daring experiments, national controversy and international success.
Also at McNally Robinson, Lori Beattie, a fitness and outdoors expert, will present a slide-show based on her book, Calgary Best Hikes and Walks, on Thursday, April 24 at 8 p.m. |
