MEC demise is no big surprise
Re: Co-op struggles in corporate climate, by Patricia Robertson, City, March 27 April 02, 2003

Can't say I'm happy about Mountain Equipment Co-op's current affairs, however, I'm not surprised. I love MEC Calgary as it is the only place where a person with a relatively extensive background in outdoor pursuits and world travel can go and be treated with disdain by an egotistical staff member who is gloating to other staff members about how he/she led their first 5.9b last weekend. It is also the only place in the world where you can read the latest "stupid questions by our customers" (read: stupid customers) on the whiteboard behind Rentals/Returns.

The general elitist values and "look at me" attitudes that permeate the store have sent me elsewhere (the Army and Navy in Forest Lawn) in search of gear. MEC has come a long way in forgetting where it came from.
