BOBI CESPEDES
Rezos
Six Degrees Records
· Solo debut of Cuban-born singer, percussionist and Yoruba-Lucumi priestess.

In customary fashion, Six Degrees offers another attempt at genre-bending hybrids. With Rezos, Cuban singer Bobi Céspedes combines the ancient sound of traditional Afro-Cuban singing and drumming with contemporary dance grooves. Unfortunately, the dated sound of the dance beat is incongruous with the deep, rich texture of Céspedes’s voice. Between the aggravating dance beats and vigorous big-band arrangements, Céspedes’s voice sometimes gets lost in the noise. Work from veteran Cuban percussionist and Planet Drum collaborator Nenge Hernández and arranger/multi-instrumentalist Oriente López helps to create a Cuban rhythmic fusion, but this only accentuates the fact that the most successful tracks are the ones where the traditional arrangements are left alone.
