· Surprise us, Ani. We know you can do it.

The first time I heard an Ani DiFranco song, some 10 years ago, I thought, "Wow, I’ve never heard anything like this before."

The first time I put on DiFranco’s new CD, Evolve, a few days ago, I thought, "Oh yeah, I know how this goes."

If you’ve never heard Ani DiFranco before, Evolve will probably be a revelation. The spitfire singer-songwriter’s unique voice, point-blank lyrics and guitar virtuosity are all in full strength on her 15th full-length album in 13 years. If you’ve been following DiFranco’s career for a while, then your expectations for this new release will likely be met. The band may be bigger, but the foundations are the same – even the requisite stream-of-consciousness spoken word track (the 10-minute epic "Serpentine") is here.

As for me? I’m waiting to have my breath taken away again. One of these albums, she’ll do it.
