I want to know how so many pop stalwarts can collaborate on one album without tripping drunkenly all over one another? The Minus 5s Down With Wilco is one of those records that sounds like it was cooked up under the influence of alcohol by a sprawling collective of close friends. In the capable hands of The Minus 5s Scott McCaughey and Wilcos Jeff Tweedy, this is a positive thing the record balances precariously between pretty harmonies and British Invasion hooks, propped up by Peter Buck, Ken Stringfellow et al on a variety of instruments.
Clever lyrics abound throughout, but the cleverest of all bookend the proceedings. "Days of Wine and Booze" is a hallucinatory, inebriated opener, while closer "Dear Employer (The Reason I Quit)," offers a bitter salve for the working wounded.
