Down-tempo beats preside over an eclectic mix of jazz, hip-hop, drum ’n’ bass and house on the Nutone compilation Nocturnal Excursions into Deep Jazzy House. The tracks range from dub master Boozoo Bajou’s satisfying Afrojazz house track "Yorba Road," to the accessibility of Parisians Llorca and Booster. Masters of electro hip-hop beats Wax Poetic and Koop mix with Canadians Jaffa, Amalia Townsend of Sekoya, and Eric Vanni (a.k.a. Rise Ashen). Organic, smooth, utterly sophisticated, and almost devoid of any kind of soul, this is musical commodity fetishism in its finest packaging. Has it gotten to the point that the sound has become too familiar – and, if so, is this featureless face the new jazz?
