KATE RUSBY
10
Pure/Compass
For several years, Kate Rusby has been at the forefront of an intense and joyous resurgence in traditional English folk music. She not only has unerring talent for choosing exquisitely simple tunes and an ear for spare and graceful arrangements, but shes been graced with a truly unique voice. It carries at once an almost childish purity and a warm, tremulous and seductive depth. Coupled with her enchanting Yorkshire accent, she could sing the phone book and make you cry.
Rusbys returned with 10, a 10-year anniversary compilation of tunes that can, for the most part, be found on previous albums. However, they have either been re-mastered or are different versions. Either way, the changes are minimal in most cases, the tempos slightly slower and the instrumentation is even more stripped down than her originally recorded versions. Nevertheless, the record maintains the heartbreaking purity and simplicity that sits at the core of all her recordings, and as an introduction to Rusbys work, this is an excellent place to jump in.
