REBECCA LEVANT
Ani Ma'amin: Hebrew, Yiddish, Sephardi Songs
Independent
· Debut release by Calgary singer Rebecca Levant exposes a superb voice.
The difficulty with a release such as Rebecca Levants Ani Ma'amin is finding a category into which it fits. This recording of traditional prayers, ballads and folk songs is bound to appeal to fans of New Age healing music. Still, it would be doing Levant a disservice to claim that this is only a New Age album it is so much more than that. Aficionados of world, roots and classical music and should also find something here to their liking.
Indeed, it might be more appropriate to compare it to the works of Chava Alberstein or any of several female artists from the Middle East who have incorporated orchestral elements in their songs. Levants previous public performances have been associated with her position as a cantorial soloist at a local synagogue. She draws primarily upon the European (Ashkenazi) Jewish tradition for material, although there are also songs from the Spanish/Moroccan (Sephardic) tradition and some modern hymns. The result is truly quite pleasant.
