With their earlier record Fusa Riot, the former Bobby Hughes Experience was launched into the lofty realm of contemporary dancefloor jazz, where artists like Jazzanova, Truby Trio and Tosca are assured a certain longevity in the record crates of the new avant-garde DJs like Gilles Peterson and Keb Darge.
Nhu Golden Era expands on the promise of Fusa Riot and, serving jazz in increments, embellishes on the past in every flute-soaked broken beat. Playing with time signatures, Hughes delves into the jazz canon and comes up with something fresh without being another flash in the pan.
Powered by a dynamic percussive engine, the combination is equally dedicated to fusion-headed frivolity and groove-oriented beats, somehow finding the essence of Fela Anikulapo Kuti, Gilberto Gil and Nina Simone beneath the drone of today’s dance music.
