· The creepily ageless good-time girl is still struttin' her stuff.

Primped, powdered, purified and synthesized, Cyndi Lauper's ‘80s-era exuberance has once again been distilled and bottled for the masses. Her romantically inclined new album Shine contains a mere five songs, two of which are versions of the title track – the pop-light mix and the "illicit mix," with electronic beats thrown in for the kids. Hardly enough to base a tour on, let alone a comeback! Threatening to "Pull you up by your love," Cyndi raps out Britney-calibre lyrics accented with her signature Betty Boop hiccups.

There was a time when Lauper's commercial potential rivalled that of Madonna, but now she seems destined to join the AM radio legions pumping out pseudo-Enya fluff for elevators and day spas. The next time you hear this album, you'll be in the dentist's chair.
