Snowboarding for Dummies

I bought a snowboard this year with the intention of learning how to surf. I saw the crossover potential and thought it would be a great way to condition myself before I hit Surfer's Paradise in Australia next year.

However, I wasn't prepared for the welling in my chest and the tingling sensation in my body when I saw the first significant snowfall. All the waves and beaches I'd been fantasizing about slowly turned into visions of perfect powder and superpipe. I needed a jumpstart to my snowboarding career and fast.

You can't beat mgtsnowboardcamp.com for local resources. An all-girl's snowboard camp with sessions starting in Alberta in December, a weekend includes coaching from Canada's top competitive athletes. Novice riders are welcome, along with developed riders looking to fine-tune their skills. Watch the coach's video online with your tuque on.

If a weekend is too short, try whistlersnowboardcamps.com. This year-round camp has week- and month-long programs with accommodation. Camps include video analysis, airport pick-up, parties and lift tickets. The site is very informative and easy to use – with photo and video galleries that justify the hefty price tag – and you can book online.

If you're already a seasoned rider, then you'll appreciate out-there.com/htl_snb.htm. A site devoted to snowboarding links across Canada, you'll find instant access to hill conditions, weather, events and even employment across the country from B.C. to Newfoundland. Don't forget the extensive links to snowboard manufacturers, retailers, guides, magazines and videos.

I can already feel my collarbone breaking.
