PETER CASE
Bee Line
Vanguard Records/ Fusion III
· After the death of his father, Peter Case beefs up his sound a little and returns to stream-of-consciousness songwriting.
· Case performs live on October 5 at Engineered Air Theatre (CPA).
Sounds, sibilance, sonorousness, sine. Sometimes, among all the biographies and album lists, the T-shirts and concert tickets, the recording studios and lyrical analysis, one forgets about the pure joy of just sitting down and screwing with sounds. Peter Case, well into the double digits with the number of solo albums he's released, makes sweet sound his plaything on Bee Line. From the perplexing instrumentation to name to the spaces he leaves for reverb, the sounds on this album appeal to the id, the pleasure principle, notes and rests dipped in the chocolate bliss of pure sound.
And if your ear can lick its fingers clean of the dripping feast, your brain might start to pry into the slats and spaces of the lyrics, which grow like flowers between the cracks in the sound. Aural sex was never so sweet.
