Just to put things into perspective, a different George Bush was in the White House when DJ Jazzy Jeff (and Will Smith) last released a studio record. A "Whatever Happened To…" TV segment for DJ Jazzy Jeff seemed to be just around the corner, so suffice to say the expectations and anticipation for this release had dwindled to nil by the time the new millennium came around. Unfazed and with very little fanfare, DJ Jazzy Jeff released a CD that is simply one of the best surprises of the year.
This CD covers a gamut of styles, with Jeff literally turning everything into gold. Whether it’s Philly soul ("We Live In Philly," featuring Jill Scott), house ("In Time") or rap ("Shake It Off"), the execution of such diversity on one CD hasn’t sounded this tight since Mos Def’s shining debut. The Magnificent, indeed.
