| As a relative newcomer to the city of Calgary, I think Gregory Elgstrand has delivered in "City fails to recognize its galleries" (Rant & Rave, Sept. 5) a remarkably accurate account of why Calgary, even without a civic gallery, continues to be a major centre for the visual arts in Canada. (Gasp! Yes, right here in Cowtown.)
Of far greater concern is the pitiful level of funding to the non-profit sector. From the Glenbow Museum right down to the smaller-sized players, there is a disheartening story about what is actually received from the province (Alberta Community Development) and the feds (Canada Council, Heritage Canada) relative to other Canadian cities. The message seems to be: Don't get too ambitious.
