Essential Online Reading Material

My limits of being a nerdy keener were always tested with assigned reading lists in university. I'd get all excited and giddy thinking about all those crisp pages just waiting to be highlighted – until third year, when I'd shuffle down to the used bookstore to find ones that weren't highlighted to death. Then I'd get the list and that familiar sense of disappointment would hit me – The Anthology of Literature: Backbreaking Volume MXMX; Astronomy: A guide with far too many bolded terms to memorize; and my personal favourite, any book simply listed as recommended.

If you're feeling a little overwhelmed with school, work or everyday life, I have my own recommended relief reading to offer – essays, presentations and highlighters absolutely not included.

The site bullymag.com delivers angst, news, culture and music with Flash movies devoted to mocking Hollywood and pharmaceutical companies. The Jackass of the Month column is entertaining, with past honourees including author Toby Young and Larry King. You'll have to explore the site a little to find all the articles and movies, or you can use the search option if you really need to find that article on Oklahoma Meat in a jiffy.

If you're looking for an online zine with a certain Canadian flavour, then brokenpencil.com is for you. Based out of Toronto since 1995, the site operates as a zine review haven. In the region category, you'll find a huge database of zines specific to city or area with reviews and info on where to pick up the newest issue. You can read feature articles online or check out when the next zine conference will be happening in your area.

More fun than researching a 25-page paper on Turkish Participle Selection. And I would know.
