AIMEE MANN
Lost In Space
Superego Records

· Fourth solo record from former member of ’Til Tuesday.

· Hey Aimee – cheer up!

Throughout her career, Aimee Mann has done a fine job of crafting lush Beatles-esque pop, but this time out her niche is a little too narrow. Her smooth laments and lovelorn lyrics have become her trademark. The resulting album is a mid-tempo melancholy opus – which would be great if we hadn’t heard it all before. Lost in Space features fuzzy guitars, velvety keyboards and aptly sparse percussion, but in the end the record sounds exactly like her last. Mann may kick it up a bit mid-record with the slow-mo rocker "Pavlov’s Bell," but further listening shows it is still a carbon copy of other songs – it just has a better guitar solo. To Mann's credit, even when she treads over familiar material, she does it with a distinct and beautiful voice, but Lost in Space doesn’t offer anything new.
