Out to Lynch

I hated Mulholland Drive. It was crap. It was bad film-noir-pulp-porn.

When I went to see it in the theatre, everyone walked out without saying a word after it ended. I was mortified. I had been trying to sell my partner on the virtues of David Lynch for years. Wild at Heart was lost on him (he hadn't seen the Wizard of Oz). He was into Lost Highway but shunned the classic Blue Velvet. I thought with all the hoopla surrounding Mulholland Drive, I had a sure thing. Like the last few episodes of Twin Peaks, I kept asking myself what went wrong.

I am now banished to solo screenings of all David Lynch movies. Alone in the dark I wait for the next seductive disappointment....

And it doesn't take long – davidlynch.com follows in the footsteps of true Lynch cinema. It's interesting to look at, but you're not sure what's going on and you have to pay for it. You can watch a free Flash episode of Dumbland – an animated sequence done by the man himself (it involves flatulence and sheds) – or, um, pay to see everything else.

According to the member testimonials, the $10 (US) per month is worth it. I'll admit that I want to see the original trailer for Eraserhead. I'm curious about "four live cameras documenting the events of nature." Bring on the three- to 10-minute video shorts, including Head with Hammer! I need to know what the Phone Booth is and read the Angriest Dog in the World comic.

But I don't want to pay for it. I'm still bemoaning the $8 I shelled out for Mulholland Drive.
