REBECCA CAMPBELL AND JUSTIN HAYNES
The Sweetest Noise
Festival
· Sophomore album from jazz guitarist Justin Haynes and singer Rebecca Campbell, who frequently provides backing vocals for Jane Siberry.
A diverse group of musicians joins Rebecca Campbell and jazz guitarist Justin Haynes for The Sweetest Noise, the follow-up to their debut album Tug. Their latest kitschy jazz-pop endeavour includes Toronto trumpeter Kevin Turcotte and bass clarinettist Lori Freedman, who was pulled away from her activity in Toronto's electro-acoustic music scene to help create a multi-layered instrumental foundation. Their influence can be heard in inspired bookends to sometimes unfocused songs.
Harmonizing the breathless quality of Campbells vocals and the gentle accompaniment of Hayness guitar, "Sweetest Noise" weaves the crystalline sound of the glockenspiel with the airy Moog and Wurlitzer, creating a delicate balance between noise and space. Understated and earnest, this album speaks of lonesome sunny afternoons spent lazing in the backyard. "Getting it Together in the Country," a Beach Boys-esque vocal meandering, spills into a beautifully chaotic avant-jazz instrumental, proving that lazy afternoons arent immune to paradox. "The Days" also stands out as a lingering French kiss to the Copacabana.
