STREET SOUNDS

On your mark, get set, record!
It's Fast Forward's first annual Mix Tape Awards

You give ’em to the boy or girl of your dreams with the hope that your amateur programming will lure them under your spell (see John Cusack in High Fidelity). You record them for long road trips if you're (a) leavin' and not lookin' back (note Pavement's "Box Elder") or (b) on a wild weekend adventure with your best friends (note The B-52's "Roam" or The Stray Cats’ "Race With The Devil").

Mix tapes make excellent gifts and, most importantly, you can impress your friends (and their friends) with your cool and eclectic taste in music: "Wow, [insert your name here] is such an interesting person!"

As a part of Streetsounds' first ever contest (we're excited, too), Fast Forward would love to invite you to submit the track listing of your dream mix to us. The grand prize winners will each receive a shiny new discman and the runners-up will receive other great prizes, like new CDs, the arts and entertainment editor’s Lord of the Rings figurine collection, movie passes, dust bunnies – sheesh, the possibilities are endless!

There is absolutely no limit to the style of music you may include, but pay attention to the fine art of flow. Throw on indie pop, rock ’n' roll, flamenco, TV theme songs from the ’80s – whatever you think will distinguish your tape from everyone else’s. (Remember to include your sources.) It can have a theme or no theme at all, but your job is to put together something that stands out.

What are you waiting for? Get to it! Send your mix, name, address, and phone number to Streetsounds Mix Tape Contest, Fast Forward Weekly, 228 - 18 Ave. SW, Calgary, AB, T2S 0C1.

Your deadline is March 29. Winners will be announced in our Spring New Music Issue on April 18. Good luck!
