A Time To Sing!
Appleseed

· An expanded reissue of a "historical" live recording.

It is no accident that A Time To Sing! was released on Appleseed. This is a label dedicated to promoting social justice through music, and folk stalwarts Holly Near, Arlo Guthrie, Ronnie Gilbert and Pete Seeger sing songs that fall well within the pantheon of socially conscious folk music. Sadly, however, their voices just do not blend all that well and the result is that the individual performances far outshine the ensemble work. There is also a distinctly dated feel to the recording, which reduces its appeal. The highlight of this two-disc set has to be Pete Seeger's rendition of Estadio Chile, the last poem written by Chilean poet Victor Jara after he and several thousand others were rounded up by the fledgling Pinochet regime and its CIA accomplices on September 11, 1973 and subsequently "disappeared." Perhaps you should buy this CD after all, if only to be reminded that there is more than one reason to remember that date.
