WU-TANG CLAN
Iron Flag
Loud Records

· "Mr. Bush, sit down, I’m in charge of the war" – Ghostface Killah on Afghanistan.

· "I guess he was on some patriotic shit at the time" – Raekwon on Ghostface Killah (to MTV News 12/19/2001).

RZA, Method Man and seven other veteran Wu-Tang Clan members have reunited to record their fourth album since they joined forces back in 1992. With a name lifted from one of their signature martial arts movie samples, Iron Flag is a smokin’ hot and multi-layered 12-track saga that recalls the glory days of Public Enemy. In fact, Flavor Flav himself steps up to the mike on "Soul Power (Black Jungle)" with the incantation, "2002, representing the Wu." Street sounds, scratching and horns punctuate the deep-down ghetto grooves and break beats. An anonymous female vocalist holds the key for this treasure box of blunt raps – "Bangers in your cars. Bangers in your Jeep. Bangers shit retarded."

I would give the album five stars, except for the conspicuous use of the word "cholesterol" in the course of a rhyme.

4/5
