In gathering together members of Belle & Sebastian, Teenage Fanclub, the Delgados and the Pastels, Shashil Dade (a.k.a. Future Pilot AKA) has compiled a group of musicians so decidedly European that their near-biological grasp of Indian and musical traditions is a pleasantly surprising success.
Recorded informally over three days at Teenage Fanclubs studios, the participants were invited to play instruments other than their usual gear. While there may be one too many short instrumental interludes that dont really go anywhere, the highs of "Witchi Tai To," the sweet lullaby "Ananda Is The Ocean" and "Om Namah Shivaya," an epic-length mantra sung in a ghostly echo by Stuart Murdoch, prove Dades experiment was worth attempting.
If only some photographic evidence of these sessions were included in the booklet a batch of pasty Scots dressed in thrift store cardigans and vintage sneakers playing Middle Eastern chord structures and Indian polyrhythms would be a truly memorable sight.
