SIMPLE MINDS
Neon Lights
EMI

· Features covers of Neil Young, Kraftwerk and Velvet Underground, among others.

Most people will enjoy a cover of a really good song – not necessarily because the cover version is at all appealing, but because they love the song. Period.

This is the case with Neon Lights, Simple Minds’ album of cover tunes. The thought that a band as good as Simple Minds would cover classics from the likes of Van Morrison, David Bowie, Patti Smith, Echo & The Bunnymen and Roxy Music is cool (considering the content) and amusing (considering they haven’t come up with any originals themselves in years).

There is nothing special about any of Simple Minds’ versions of these songs to set them apart from or make them as good as the originals. That being said, honourable mention goes to their "Dancing Barefoot" and "Bring on the Dancing Horses" – the best on the CD. This is a great album for those who love Simple Minds, but have yet to be introduced to some of the more exceptional songwriters of the ’60s, ’70s and ’80s.

For those who know and love the artists covered, why bother when you can pull out your old records and listen to the originals?
