· Hey look... Is that the Unabomber? Oh no, wait... That’s just E.

The Eels, essentially the man called E and a cast of constantly changing backers, have long embraced the dark side. Documenting his sister’s tragic suicide with the unsettling Electro-Shock Blues, and his mother’s subsequent death with Daisies of the Galaxy, E has consistently managed to equate his grief with the prettiest of simplistic pop figures and chiming toy-box orchestration. Souljacker is the sound of E getting angry.

Backed up with fuzz-bass and raw distorted guitar (courtesy of PJ Harvey’s longtime cohort John Parish), the likes of "Dog Faced Boy" (as in, "life’s not easy for a...") and "Teenage Witch" show a surprising affinity for The Stooges and Tom Waits. Elsewhere, it’s business as usual with the comely "Fresh Feeling" and the affecting "World Of Shit" ("In this world of shit/ Baby you are it/ A little light that shines all over").

E has always kept one toe dipped firmly in the deep end, but with Souljacker he's jumped right in.
