Vote Rock City 2001, an anti-apathy event organized by Ward 8 aldermanic candidate Art Proctor, will take place Sunday, October 14.

Proctor said his intention is to encourage Calgarians, especially young people, to take part in the municipal election on October 15. He modeled the event on the United States’ Rock the Vote campaign, but added a few local twists. Vote Rock City will feature musicians, comedians, dance and an interactive candidates forum, all based around the idea of fighting voter apathy. Several other candidates are planning on attending, including mayoralty candidate Brett Martin.

Proctor is also planning to donate half of the event’s proceeds to the Red Cross. The event will take place at the Emerald Café, beginning at 7 p.m.

SAIT officials are calling their new transit pass a "huge success." The number of riders taking transit to and from SAIT is up more than 38 per cent over last year, according to numbers released by Calgary Transit – a rise they attributed to the new U-Pass introduced at the start of the fall semester.

Under the program, SAIT students and staff can purchase an unlimited use transit pass for $8.75 per month compared to $47 a month for a regular post-secondary student pass. The Calgary Transit figures also indicate that overall bus usage to and from SAIT has increased 111 per cent.

· A group of Calgarians are holding a workshop to help people make constructive choices in the wake of the terrorist attacks in the United States and the subsequent war in Afghanistan.

The workshop will take place at the Coast Plaza Hotel on Thursday, October 11 at 6:30 p.m. Donations will be collected for the New York Fire Fighters 911 Disaster Relief Fund, Oxfam Canada and The Boys and Girls Club of Calgary.

· The seventh annual Calgary Health Expo will place Sunday, October 14, featuring a lecture series, demonstrations and 100 exhibition booths at the Big Four Building at Stampede Park.
