· A world of flavours comes to Eau Claire Market this week with the annual Taste of Calgary international festival of food and drinks from August 9 to 12, featuring samples from over 36 restaurants and beverage companies. .

Admission to the festival is free, and festival-goers purchase tickets to buy samples. The hours are August 9, 10 and 11 from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and August 12 from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. For more information visit the Web site at www.atasteofcalgary.com.

· The Marda Loop community’s annual party, Marda Gras, takes place Sunday, August 12 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will be more than 300 artisan tables at the event, held in the area of 33rd Avenue and 20th Street S.W., along with entertainment all day, a unique car show, beach volleyball, a climbing wall and children’s activities.

· The University of Calgary’s Faculty of Kinesiology is teaming up with the Calgary Soccer Federation to explore the possibility of establishing a world-class sport pavilion on campus for university athletic programs and the community. The 29,300-square-metre pavilion would be developed south of 32nd Avenue N.W., and would include six indoor soccer fields and a 200-metre indoor track. The fields would be developed to accommodate tennis, roller hockey, lacrosse, lawn bowling, field hockey and other sports.

The U of C’s campus community plan has identified a need for more academic and research space and sporting facilities within the faculty. However, some area residents have voiced concerns about the additional traffic it would generate, especially when combined with the new children’s hospital planned for the area.

· Snow Jam returns to Calgary this weekend with 120 tonnes of snow as well as top athletes and a mainstage lineup including Social Distortion, Mix Master Mike, Tricky Woo, Bif Naked, Baby Blue Soundcrew and several others.

This is the third year the event, formerly DV8, will be held at Olympic Plaza. The highlight is a 60-foot-high quarter-pipe, where professional snowboarders and freeskiers strut their stuff, and there will also be a vert ramp and street course for skateboard, BMX and in-line riders.

Snow Jam runs from noon to 10:30 p.m. on August 11, and noon to 6:30 p.m. on August 12. Tickets are available at TicketMaster.

· The Canada Council for the Arts is hosting an information session on its grants to professional artists in dance, media arts, music, theatre, writing and publishing, interdisciplinary work and performance art, and the visual arts. Canada Council officers will talk about grants available for professional artists and arts organizations, and how to apply.

The session takes place Thursday, August 16 from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Art Gallery of Calgary (117 - 8 Ave. S.W.). For information contact information officer Maria Martin at 1-800-263-5588, ext. 4075.

· The Alberta Wilderness Association (AWA) and Mountain Equipment Co-op (MEC) are again joining forces to fight for the increased protection of wilderness in Alberta through the Wilderness in our Hands campaign.

On Saturday, August 11 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at MEC, AWA volunteers will be providing information about the threats to parks and wilderness areas in the province, and how Albertans can help protect these crucial areas for future generations to enjoy.

· Portions of the Weaselhead and South Glenmore regional pathway will be closed temporarily between now and November 9 due to repair projects. Sections of the pathway may be closed or re-routed during the following periods: August 6 to September 21 – Weaselhead wooden pedestrian bridge to South Glenmore Park; September 24 to October 19 – Glenmore Trail South to Eagle Ridge Drive (behind rockyview Hospital); and October 22 to November 9 – Heritage Park south to Glenmore Landing.
