Look into the Hypnotic Eye

More and more independent filmmakers are getting a shot at showcasing their work with help from Web broadcasters. With streaming Web media (Quicktime, Real Player and Windows Media Player being most popular) and an increasing number of Web philes utilizing high speed Internet access, the sky's the limit for companies like Atom Films, Mediatrip and my newest find, Hypnotic.

Hypnotic.com houses a solid base of films within the usual animation/comedy range, but also offers channels in action, documentary, experimental and thriller. Another nice option is that the films offer a choice of all media formats, so your connection speed is taken into account. Unlike it's contemporaries, Hypnotic has some major partnerships and financial backing (including Universal Studios), which means there is a little less crap to sift through if you want to watch something decent. If you have a film to submit, they want to see it, or just become a member (film festival prize packs up for grabs) so you can rant and rave on the film forums about your picks and pans.

You don't have to be a member to watch, and with the variety of films available you'll have plenty to keep you occupied. The "mental hygiene" film Is it Time to Swap? is a nice take on the prescriptive reels of the 1950s. Instead of learning how to wash your hair, the film gives new insights on how to end a double date. Also look for Rick & Steve: The Happiest Gay Couple in All the World – this is where Legoland meets Queer As Folk. If you can't decide what to watch first, the site provides member recommendations, and you can search for a film by title or, with a little luck, by subject.
