Samba Soul 70!
Ziriguiboom / Six Degrees

· High energy compilation documents the birth of Afro-Americano-Brazilian hybrid known as SambaSoul, and includes tracks by songwriters Gilberto Gil and Jorge Ben.

In the ’60s Stan Getz and João Gilberto brought the samba to North America with the phenomenally successful "The Girl From Ipanema." At the same time, American black culture was having a tremendous effect on the musicians of Rio and São Paulo. With an enthusiasm that was unstoppable, SambaSoul was born.

Latin music compilations often fall into formulaic territory, but this CD, compiled by the members of Bossavuvanova, is a real treasure. Avoiding all the "Crickets Sing For Anamarias" of the genre, the disc captures regional artists from Brazil who are exploding with energy – you can hear the smiles on the singers' faces as jazz, soul and Cuban music fuse in a place where only the groove matters – and where young Brazilians raised their fists and shouted "fight the power" in a voice all their own.
