| Finding Balance amid the Pandemonium
Scratch fans, B-Boys and B Gurls all may rejoice, as DMC season is upon us. Once again 10 local DJs square off to scratch, juggle and weave their way into your heart, with more magic than Kreskin, as they vie for an opportunity to compete against their peers at the national and international DMC DJ competitions. Last years riegning national champ and Cherry Lounge resident, the magnificent DJ Pump, will be on hand to guide the festivities down at the Palace on Sunday, June17. Tickets for the Calgary Elimination will be available at the Source, Feroshus, Brix, and Aluminum Planet as well as The Palace. A pre-party event will be held at the Cherry Lounge on Friday, June 15.
Another new all-night event will begin this week over at the Emerald Café on Friday, June 15. Mark Thomas, Arlen and Mel Reyes will team up to bring you a night of four on the floor, entitled Balance. Doors will open at midnight.
This weekend, youll find a couple of out-of-town beat-mongers scattered amongst local venues, the biggest of which would have to be hard trance DJ Micro, who has worked long to set his pace above the hordes of ambitious harder-edged DJs. He broke ground with the notorious Caffeine record label and then moved on to release his latest CD with Moonshine Records. Joining Micro will be Anabolic Frolic as well as locals Ariel and Roel, Bazooka Joe, M & Emes, Al Bass, Commodore, Nick Luit, Mike Grimes and Kenny Young. Theyll be playing at a sportsplex near you (venue TBA), and this time the event, called Happy Days, will happen Saturday, June 16. Tickets are available at Feroshus.
For those who desire a smaller venue and event. Music is the Answer offers a more intimate setting on Friday, June 15. It will feature Rowland the Bastard versus Five Alive, as well as Cary Chang, Ryan Phelan, Anwar, Fever, Doug Page, Duffy, J-Byrd, Nic-E, Ara de Lei and the flying Dutchman, Dekoning. This will rest on the progressive side of all things trance, drum n bass and house. Tickets are available at Feroshus.
In the clubs, youll find Anthem and Jon the Dentist joining Warehouse/Horizon resident Special Agent for another all-night excursion into the harder side of 4/4 on Friday, June 15 at the Warehouse.
Also on June 15, the Evolution of clubbing continues at The Palace with the mighty duo of Saeed and Palash guesting with Evolution residents on Friday. S and P, founders of Americas Additive Records will play a techy-edged set in the main room along with Mark Thomas. Anwar will host the Plasma Lounge.
Fehrenheit has left the Embassy and moved on to the former Dooie Stevens/Mistys location, now called Pandemonium. Fehrenheit regular residents Domenic G and Jon Delerious will still host your mid-week tech-house getaway, while Testa, Clarke and J Jonus Jordon have stayed behind to host a revamped evening at the Embassy (perhaps named Celcius?).
Local legend and DJ extraordinare Jon Spade has also moved on to Pandemonium, leaving his long-running residency at the Capitol for the newly renod digs on Bow Trail. Hell play the main room, a blend of all things danceable, both Friday and Saturday evenings at Pandemonium.
Your 2step option still happens at the Underground (below the Warehouse) on Sundays, with resident high-stepper Refuge, and this week, youll find DJ Ascension by his side as the guest DJ. E-mail Cunga66@home.com if you got a thing. |
