| Further to the controversy over The Last Pancake Breakfast, a painting by Chicago artist Dirk Detzner bearing striking similarities to Calgary artist Aubrey Hallis's older painting, The Last Breakfast (A Tale of Two Cereals, by Tom Jonsson, March 15): a friend of mine lived in Banff in the 1980s with a roommate who had created a similar work.
The artist, though employing Snap, Crackle and Pop in the same position as Mr. Hallis, broke free of the tyranny of breakfast logo inconography and, in particular, made daring use of the Gerber (TM) baby in the thankless role of Judas Iscariot, sack of gold coins in hand and all.
Maybe this artist/roommate was Aubrey Hallis (or Dirk Detzner). Maybe he was ripped off by Aubrey Hallis (or Dirk Detzner). Or maybe the meeting of commercial foodstuff mascots with Da Vinci's Last Supper is a sort of universal archtype (think Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth here) independently inspiring these three artists and God knows how many others across the planet.
