Monkeys and Media

When I tell people I write Web reviews they always ask me what I look for in a site. My personal favourites are sites that incorporate a large range of product or variety under one roof, making it impossible to not go back every day and obsessively check out what’s new. I’ve been following some sites since I ripped my computer out of the box, and others I found by chance a few hours before a deadline. This week’s selection is a combination of both.

While looking through a computer mag, I found a reference to geek wear at wehaveaproblem.com. This was a bit of an understatement. The site is actually the official site of Houston, which is an "art gallery, design studio, publishing company, retail store and clothing manufacturer" all in one. This site is noteworthy because of the links and overall presentation. The only downfall is that some of the links are outdated, but there is still plenty of groovy eye candy to keep you amused. The art exhibitions are available to view online, and you can order everything from the special edition Rushmore DVD to the previously mentioned "geek wear" for computer users.

I’ve been waiting to write about paulfrankisyourfriend.com since time began. The old site was pretty keen, but the new and improved site is an interactive media/product/links haven. Paul Frank is the creator of Julius the monkey, who you’ve probably seen on various T-shirts, wallets, buttons and PJs (the best selection in town can be found at Blue Light Special). There is more to the man than the monkey, however, and the site proves it. An indispensable library of links and product goodies makes for hours of monkey-guided enjoyment – don’t forget to push the banana on the elevator.

It's hard to lift off a pic from the PF site so I used one from Houston. It's from an artist named Shepard Fairey who has actually collaborated with Paul Frank for a series of OBEY toques-he's actually featured on both sites. Although his artwork is more on the Houston page.
