LOW
Things We Lost In The Fire
Kranky
· Special edition vinyl release contains two bonus tracks, originally only available on the rare Dinosaur Act EP.
There are far too many rock bands that mistake an increase in volume for an increase in emotion, as though cranking up the amps and letting the distortion rip will bludgeon us into seeing just how honest they really are. Low have always understood that sometimes the most powerful gestures are the quietest, and on Things We Lost In The Fire, theyve composed some of their most passionate work since bursting (albeit quietly and shyly) onto the scene in the early 1990s.
Where Lows last album Secret Name simmered quietly, demanding the listener to move in closer, Fire sees Low embracing a fuller sound complete with horns, strings, some minimal experimentation with loops and samples, and even the occasional "squeak" from Hollis Mae, daughter of founding members Mimi Parker and Alan Sparhawk. Fittingly, the songs approach the feel and timbre of classic fireside hymns, each one a timeless testament to faith.
Theres been a recent flurry of activity and attention for Low, including placement in Gap ads and a fascinating collaboration with The Spring Heel Jack. The beautiful Things We Lost In The Fire should be the final step in gaining Low the attention theyve always deserved.
