SLEEPY LABEEF
Rockabilly Blues
Rounder Records

· Rockabilly giant shoots from the hip, and misses.

"Hello? That you, Sleepy?"

"Uh huh."

Hi, it’s Scott, Scott Billington. Y’know, your harmonica player from the old days."

"Uh huh."

"Well anyway, listen up. I found these old studio outtakes you did over the past 20 years or so, and I thought, "Wouldn’t it be great if we could persuade Rounder Records to put them out?"

"Hmmm."

"Mind you, there’s a couple of clunkers here. You somehow manage to massacre ‘Mannish Boy’ and ‘Bright Lights, Big City.’ And to be honest, your vocals on ‘Rooster Blues’ – well, just what were you thinking? Let’s face it, you’re no Carl Perkins."

"!"

"But still, you do a pretty good job on ‘Long Tall Sally’ and ‘Rip It Up’ – then again, so does my grandmother, come to think of it."

"Uh huh."

"Anyway, think about it, Sleepy. Oh yeah, we’ll need a nice snappy title. How about ‘Rockabilly something or other?’ Yeah, yeah – I know there’s fuck-all rockabilly on it – but never mind. Oh, and sorry for waking you.’
