MAGNETOPHONE
i guess sometimes i need to be reminded of how much you love me
4AD

· Dance music humanly impossible to dance to.

There is an old saying in rock criticism that goes "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture," and for the most part this adage is true. There are few bands for which the perfect description pops to mind, and we, the lowly music critics, are often left scratching our heads. Magnetophone is one of the few exceptions to the rule.

i guess sometimes i need to be reminded of how much you love me is the sound of Kid A flipping through the Warp Records catalogue at the local beat boutique, with early Alec Empire playing at half-speed in the background. Fragmented beats fly in from every direction, joining up somewhere in the middle, always one half-step out of time with the world. Metal chairs fall down stairwells, somehow creating the perfect soundtrack music to a minor seizure. Blown speakers struggle to keep up with the noise, yet everything comes across as strangely beautiful.

With Magnetophone we can go as far as we like with flowery comparison and metaphor, but the best description is also the simplest: i guess sometimes... is one of the neatest records to come along in a long time.
