CD Review
by Mary-Lynn McEwenWACO BROTHERS
Electric Waco Chair
Bloodshot· The Mekons Jon Langford follows 1999s WacoWorld with a spirited and more effective set of tunes
· Its a really pretty blue CD with a cool bucking horsey on it, too
Jon Langford uses juxtaposition like a dressing gown, covering the naked form of songs with unexpected sounds and images even as he sings about people being "Gods little mistakes." His ability to introduce the fiddle snugly into a song about nightclubbing mirrors his Mekons days and the uncanny way some of these tunes ring into the past with hairline crack allusions to the Eagles(!). There is an odd joy to the tunes odd because the lyrics swim in melancholy and longing, dead ends and back alley regret. But the music says the answer to pain is to live harder, to course through the pulse of the songs with a pounding bloodiness that is strictly alive.
