· Caspar Brötzmann, a German, wails like his daddy

Leave it to the Germans to be heavy. Caspar Brötzmann is German, ergo Caspar Brötzmann is heavy. On his latest CD, the weighty axeman improvises his way through six tracks of jazz-metal, paying homage to the nastiest personality attributes of Jimi Hendrix and Sonny Sharrock. The listener is not treated to much in the way of melody and composition. In fact, there is little to distinguish each of the tracks from each other.

Like his father saxophonist Peter Brotzmann, however, Caspar wails with brute force as he plays electric blues licks that are earmarked for the apocalypse and tinged with plenty of feedback and overtones. There is nothing new or innovative here, but the raw emotion blares through the speakers. Those who want to hear a guitarist scream through his instrument are in for a treat.
