Without a fixed address, Calgary’s 1,300 homeless have been unable to vote. But an announcment by chief electoral officer Jean-Pierre Kingsley, states that by designating shelters as dwellings, the homeless can cast their ballots this November. In a tight race, the additional voters could settle a close outcome. The majority of homeless people in the city are situated at the Calgary centre. Included in the downtown riding boundaries are Alliance MP Eric Lowther, Progressive Conservative Leader Joe Clark, and Liberal Joanne Levy. Calgary’s Drop-In Centre will list as many people as it can, and bring them to polling stations to vote. It is estimated to be about a 60 percent turn-out by the new voters.
