The Beautiful South have made a career out of creating cheery pop songs composed with a poison pen. Their legacy is unshaken with these 17 bittersweet songs written from the perspective of beautiful loser. All the witty allusions, clever metaphors and dexterous word play are in place, and all the melodies and choruses are cue-ball perfect. But that’s the problem. Painting It Red has trouble differentiating itself from previous recordings. The irony of this irony is (enter clever lyric, repeat three times)....
