It was a glorious fall day. Blowing like a fallen leaf down Bloor Street, that equatorial thoroughfare that bisects the Centre of the Universe, was a copy of the literary newsletter Word. In it, a favourable review of Calgary’s PHU collective and their Web site at http://www.ucalgary.ca/~dkmatthi/phu/. This proves that even in Toronto, you can’t shake a stick without hitting a Calgary writer or group thereof.

Toronto is where poet Betsy Struthers grew up. This week Mount Royal College’s Satellite Series presents the former League of Canadian Poets president launching her fifth book of poetry, entitled Driven (Black Moss Press). This is Struthers’s first book since Virgin Territory (Wolsak & Wynn, 1996). The editor, poetry educator and mystery writer reads on October 27 at noon at Mount Royal College (Room E177).

A lot of people are curious, at one time or another, about how those romance novels get themselves written. And about whether it’s possible to write one oneself, and perhaps become the next Dame Barbara Cartland, or even Pauline Gedge. If you’re really serious about the craft of romance writing, you can join the Alberta Romance Writers' Association. They’re open to new members until October 31, and they’re holding an open meeting on October 26 at 7 p.m. (223 - 12 Ave. S.W.). While there, you can learn about researching your romance novel from author Terri Baker. Call Donna at 202-0330 for more details.

Deadlines: without them, nothing would ever get done. By many of us, at least. Here are two more to worry about: October 30 is the last day to apply to the Writing Studio for 2001 at the Banff Centre for the Arts. A small library could be filled with the good writing that has been started, finished or polished at The Banff Centre. If you see yourself becoming part of that, e-mail info@banffcentre.ab.ca or visit www.banffcentre.ab.ca/writing for details. Don’t procrastinate.

The very next day is the deadline for Prairie Fire’s Short Fiction Contest, which is described in full at www.prairiefire.mb.ca.
