Re: Banning pesticides not the answer to misinformation, by Renate Nix (Letters, Sept. 14 issue)

Oh Hallowed Pesticides, How wonderful Thou Art. We createth you from Chemicals, so you can Guideth us to Healthiness. We Maketh you to Kill Millions, so you can make us Free. Hundreds of Thousands have Died For our Sins of Making You for Me.

Ah, nothing like a good old prayer meeting to make us all feel good about the destruction we cause upon ourselves, our environment and those who share this planet with us. One problem though, it doesn’t really make us feel better, does it? Neither do these noxious chemicals and toxins that we insist are necessary to keep the dreaded diseases away. Which diseases are we talking about, by the way? Are there really all these dangers lurking about waiting to pounce on some unsuspecting ingrate "green freak" that refuses to love and/or worship the chemical industry? Or is it more the fact that we as a species are spoiled into believing that any inconvenience we come across can and therefore must be sprayed away, or wiped out, or at the very least controlled, regardless of the consequences – direct or indirect, immediate or gradual?

Massacre the Richardsons’ ground squirrels because the chance is far too good that someone may, through lack of foresight and care, stumble in one of their burrowing holes. If it can be done in such a fashion that it will cause them untold pain from internal bleeding due to the poisons used, all the better, just to show them who’s God! Those nasty dandelions also deserve everything we give them, not to mention the mosquitoes. It’s a wonder that God himself didn’t create the pesticides. What a slacker! As a matter of fact, why did he create these pests – maybe he’s on their side... maybe he is actually anti-human, the way he makes it so darned hard to enjoy life as we want. What kind of a benevolent being could he be to treat us so badly, by creating so many nuisances for us? The Hell with Him, we’ve got our chemicals, we can do what we want!

(Just for the sake of those who are so easily swayed by the marketing techniques of the manufacturers of these poisons, this letter isn’t actually supportive of them. This was done in the utmost sarcasm; I admit this because I suspect that those who believe in the chemical industry are also likely to believe this letter to be equally sincere. Please forgive them that they know not wherein lies the truth.)

Humbly written, whilst lying prostrate, in homage to the gods of destruction – mankind, I submit this to you in earnest.
